SCTE/ISBE UNVEILS CORTEX™ MOBILE APP; KEY COMPONENT OF NEXT-GEN EDUCATION SYSTEM DELIVERS HIGH-VALUE ON-THE-JOB LEARNING

SEPT. 27, 2016 (Philadelphia, PA)—The Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE) and its global arm, the International Society of Broadband Experts (ISBE) today unveiled the CORTEX Mobile App, a key component of its CORTEX Expert Development System™ that will use cognitive science to improve learning outcomes for the cable technical workforce.

During the opening general session of SCTE/ISBE Cable-Tec Expo®, Tony Werner, president of technology and product for Comcast Cable and chairman of the SCTE/ISBE Board of Directors, showed how the CORTEX™ Mobile App can extend learning and knowledge recall through interaction on the job site, where learning and performance matter most.

A product of collaboration between SCTE/ISBE and Infosys, the CORTEX Mobile App leverages SCTE/ISBE’s role as the pivot of cable telecommunications workforce education.  Engineering and operations professionals can access SCTE/ISBE’s vast library of technical resources and training content developed in conjunction with the organization’s role as the industry’s standards development body; can access educational content created by SCTE/ISBE technology partners; and can contribute to or draw from a unique community of member experts that can drive social learning by creating and rating tech tips for sharing across the industry.

“Because 80 percent of all learning occurs on the job, our workforces require tools that can deliver that information whenever and wherever it is needed,” said Reni Gorman, vice president, learning and development for SCTE/ISBE.  “The CORTEX Mobile App builds on SCTE/ISBE’s unique relationships with our MSO and technology partners such as Alpha, ARRIS, Commscope and ComSonics to expedite mastery of subject matter, driving customer satisfaction, customer retention and business results.”

The app prominently features a “Tool Kit” of informational resources and calculators from technology partners and other sources that can drive on-the-job learning.  In addition, it includes a searchable “Resources” 1ibrary that offers one-stop access to SCTE/ISBE standards and specifications, white papers and webinars; “Tech Tips” that are delivered in bite-sized chunks; and a “My Learning” section that provides an individualized roadmap of SCTE/ISBE training completed and courses available.

Initial technology partners of the CORTEX Mobile App include:

  • Alpha Technologies, which has provided app versions of its “Electricity 101” and “Network Power” pocket guides;
  • ARRIS, which has contributed an app version of its “Cable Technician Pocket Guide;”
  • Commscope, whose “eCalc” calculator is specifically designed for industry professionals; and
  • ComSonics,  which has developed “Leakage Math,” an electronic version of SCTE/ISBE’s “Useful Leakage Formulas” operational practice.

As the hub of cable technology and applied science, SCTE/ISBE is uniquely positioned to work directly with technology partners on learning and development resources.  ARRIS is the first technology partner to work with SCTE/ISBE to provide app users with embedded links to ARRIS product resources, enabling streamlined access to important technical specifications and product information for field technicians and engineering and operations professionals.

The CORTEX Mobile App is available now to SCTE/ISBE members for download on both iOS and Android devices.

The patent-pending CORTEX EDS has been specifically designed to align workforce training needs with organizational performance goals using the latest cognition and learning methodologies, allowing organizations to demonstrate impact and to maximize the ROI of training by drawing a direct line between learning and performance. An acronym for Curriculum Optimized for ROI and Technical Excellence, CORTEX currently is being tested by operator partners.  The system will be available exclusively to cable system operator members of the SCTE/ISBE Corporate Alliance Partner Program in 2017 and will include features that are designed to improve the learning process, notably: learning progression reports that demonstrate employee and company advances toward goals; professional development reports that can be weighted into employee promotion evaluations; and psychometric analyses of testing response patterns that can inform continuous improvement of training content.
